How to silence your inner chatterbox…

I’ve written before about your inner chatterbox, the voice inside your head that’s constantly active… going over what’s happened in the past, worrying about what might happen in the future.

Much of the time you may be mentally beating yourself up, putting yourself down, telling yourself you can’t, or that you’re not good enough. So, knowing that your thoughts create your reality, how much would you like to silence your negative inner voice and start to think more positively?

Here is a simple exercise that can help you do so…

Take a rubber band and place it around one of your wrists. Each time you notice the band, pause, check what you are thinking, and if it’s at all negative, tell it to STOP! Be firm, let it know you mean it, and at the same time ping the band so you have a slight physical sensation. No self harming here, it’s not about punishing yourself, it’s about creating new patterns! Once you go about your business, it will creep back in and continue with it’s old ways, but as soon as you notice the rubber band again and are alerted to your thoughts, just tell that voice again, firmly, to STOP!

It’s a bit like training a pet. Each time you repeat a command, it gradually becomes programmed to respond to that command. You can even give it a reward when it does, by choosing a thought that will make you feel good for a change!

The more frequently you do this, the sooner you will be able to take back control of your inner voice, instead of allowing it to control you…
