The Weight Loss Battle
So many people struggle to lose weight and battle with over-eating, excessive dieting, binge eating and other eating disorders, but why is it so difficult to eat less and maintain a healthy weight? When we were babies we just ate the right amount of food for our bodies and then stopped, and wild animals eat only when they are hungry, and stop when they’re full. It’s only when we get a little older that negative eating habits are developed, and when animals are pets fed by their owners that they become overweight.
For most humans, over-eating and weight issues are caused by all sorts of things other than genuine hunger, including learned beliefs and behaviours in childhood, and then bad habits formed as we go through life. Many people use food to ‘push down’ negative feelings, or to fill a void, perhaps feelings of loneliness, boredom, sadness, or low self-worth. Of course it’s not actually possible for over-eating to really make us feel good and inevitably after we’ve done it, we end up feeling much worse physically and emotionally than we did before. Often we eat for ‘comfort’, to cheer ourselves up, to celebrate, as a reward, or we may eat mindlessly, putting food into our mouths without even thinking about it, just because it’s there.
Many of the reasons why we over-eat can be buried in our subconscious minds, so we’re not even consciously aware of why we are doing it. There is an ongoing battle between the part which knows all the reasons why it would be a good idea to eat less and lose weight, and the part which for some reason wants to continue comfort eating and keep the weight on. If these underlying issues aren’t dealt with, we may lose weight temporarily, but the ‘yo-yo’ dieting and weight loss – weight gain pattern will be likely to continue, which is why dieting is such a huge commercial industry.
In order to help my clients lose weight with hypnotherapy and permanently change their eating habits, I generally begin by using hypnsis to take them back to childhood, to become aware of any memories or experiences which may be connected to over-eating and being overweight. I then usually use EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique or Tapping) to help them release any unwanted thoughts, limiting beliefs or negative feelings connected with eating issues to set themselves free. EFT is very powerful yet very easy to use, so they can use it whenever they need, to ‘tap away’ future unwanted emotions, habits, cravings etc.
Just as many people go on crash diets because they want a quick fix, many who come to me as a hypnotherapist to help them lose weight with hypnosis are hoping for a magic wand! Although in the majority of cases there are positive benefits after just one session, losing weight permanently by changing your thoughts and habits is part of an on-going process.
Hypnosis is not about me putting someone into a trance, or me making anyone change the way they think and feel, it’s a two-way process during which you need to allow yourself to go along with my suggestions in order to enter a deeply relaxed state. While in this state, you can then allow yourself to accept further suggestions into your subconscious mind about making positive changes, being in control, eating mindfully and consciously, and only when you are actually hungry.
As well as hypnotherapy and EFT, I use powerful NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)Â techniques which help you to re-programme your mind by visualising and imagining yourself looking and feeling the way you want to. So rather than thinking negatively about how you much you dislike being over-weight, you can focus on your positive goal of becoming slim, fit, healthy, and happy.
I’ve worked with clients who have previously spent up to £8,000 having gastric bands fitted, and then done things like liquidising chocolate and melting ice cream because they still felt the emotional need for the satisfaction of swallowing these fattening foods. Further proof that when the underlying issues connected to the surface problem of over-eating are not dealt with, the subconscious part of your mind will continue to sabotage your goals…
